Animal Identification

What Animal Is Making Noise in My Attic?

Attic noises usually fall into a small number of patterns. Squirrels are active at dawn and dusk and make scampering, rolling sounds — often accompanied by chewing.

Rats are nighttime animals. Their sounds are lighter and more scratchy, with occasional squeaks and quick movements along trusses.

Raccoons are heavy. Thumping, rolling, and vocalizations from adults or kits point to raccoons, usually at night.

Bats are quiet. High-pitched chirping and fluttering at dusk are the main indicators, along with greasy stains near a small entry point.

If you are unsure, an inspection identifies the species using sounds, droppings, damage patterns, and entry-point evidence.
